Western Digital WD85PURZ – 8TB 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 3.5-Inch Surveillance Hard Drive (WD Purple Pro Series)
The WD85PURZ is an 8TB WD Purple Pro surveillance drive built for continuous recording in AI-enabled NVR and multi-bay security systems. It suits system integrators and CCTV distributors specifying storage for high-channel-count video recorders, where sustained write performance and Always On reliability matter more than the random-read profile of desktop drives. Note that real-world bandwidth depends on the host SATA controller and recording configuration.
Key specifications (table)
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Model | WD85PURZ (WD Purple Pro series) |
| Capacity | 8 TB |
| Interface | SATA 6 Gb/s (backwards compatible with slower SATA links, bandwidth then limited accordingly) |
| Form Factor | 3.5-inch |
| Spindle Speed | 7200 RPM (higher sustained throughput than typical 5400 RPM surveillance-class drives) |
| Cache | 256 MB |
| Workload Rate Limit | Up to 550 TB/year (guidance for planning, not a warranty term) |
| Recording Technology | AllFrame AI™ for AI-enabled NVRs (reduces frame loss during video plus analytics workloads) |
| MTBF | 2.5 million hours (reliability metric, not a service-life guarantee) |
| Stream Support | Up to 64 HD video streams + 32 AI streams (camera count depends on bitrates and retention targets) |
| Operating Temperature | 0°C to 65°C |
| Vibration Protection | Enhanced for multi-bay systems (relevant for dense NVR chassis) |
Good to know
- Designed for surveillance NVRs, not NAS: WD Purple Pro targets 24/7 video write workloads, while IronWolf covers NAS and Exos covers enterprise storage — choose by workload class, not capacity alone.
- Within the WD Purple family, the Pro tier adds the 7200 RPM spindle, higher workload rating, and AllFrame AI support, positioning it above the standard Purple drives typically used in smaller DVR builds.
- Confirm your NVR firmware supports drives of this capacity tier before ordering, and size the array against camera count and retention days rather than the maximum stream ratings.
